AARP California is proud to announce that Senator Maria Elena Durazo has been named its 2025 Legislator of the Year in recognition of her outstanding advocacy for California’s family caregivers. Senator Durazo’s leadership was instrumental in authoring SB 590, a landmark bill that expands paid family leave (PFL) to include “designated persons”—also known as “family of choice”—ensuring that all Californians, regardless of traditional family structure, can care for loved ones facing serious illness.
Caregiving can be complicated, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Planning is the most important aspect of caregiving that will assist caregivers as their loved ones’ age. If planned correctly, older adults will have much input in the decisions concerning them. At a recent AARP Virginia webinar, participants were reminded that it is a process, and having the right tools will make the process less complicated.
At AARP, we constantly track the latest fraud scams to stay one step ahead of scammers. According to the FBI’s most recent Elder Fraud Report, elder fraud complaints to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center increased by 46%, and associated losses increased by 43% in 2024. New York had the fourth highest number of complaints filed by people over the age of 60, and is the fourth highest in monetary losses in this age group, according to the FBI data.
