AARP Florida is advocating to improve protections for people who rely on legal guardians. Priorities include having a central database to track how many people professional guardians are overseeing, as well as making sure guardians have the training and tools they need.

The state’s 2.9 million family caregivers provide selfless assistance to loved ones, a task that has been particularly challenging during the pandemic.

AARP’s Florida State Director, Jeff Johnson, issued the following statement today on AARP’s concerns about recommendations from a state task force on the reopening of elder-care facilities to visitors.

It was to be only a 30-day respite trial period when Vittorio C., a proud, strong, 84-year-old New Yorker, went to a memory-care facility in South Florida during March of this year.

Elder-Care facility residents and staff represent 2 percent of state’s population and more than half of all Coronavirus deaths.
