On behalf of our 1.7 million members, AARP Illinois commends the Illinois Commerce Commission’s decision to reject Peoples Gas’ System Modernization Program (SMP) proposal.
The following statement was issued by AARP Illinois State Director Philippe Largent following the introduction of the FY25 Budget:
AARP Illinois and Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias are working hard to pass legislation that would raise the driving mandatory age to 87 (from the current 79) at which older drivers would be required to take a driving test before renewing their license.

The excitement builds for the AARP-commissioned mural, Celebrando Comunidad, by local artist Elizabeth Reyes in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood! TODAY, bright and early, workers started to remove the existing paint off the walls of a proud neighborhood establishment, Nuevo Leon Restaurant. This, and a lot of work to come, is in preparation for the greatly-anticipated mural.
AARP is opening an exciting new outdoor fitness park at Lincoln Park in coordination with the Springfield Park District. If you live in the Springfield area, come join us for the celebration and ribbon-cutting!

In the fight against Alzheimer’s we have different ways to protect brain health and delay dementia. These include regular aerobic exercise, eating a low-inflammatory diet like the Mediterranean or MIND diet, treating conditions that harm the brain such as diabetes and hypertension, staying socially active, achieving higher education, and being a life-long learner.
This year’s Facts and Figures report from the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 5.8 million Americans are living with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease–a number expected to grow steeply in coming decades as Baby Boomers age. The report also lists and defines the stages of Alzheimer’s disease, one of which might be unfamiliar to you.
