AARP New Hampshire State President Dick Chevrefils spoke in favor of the reauthorization of the New Hampshire Health Protection Program (Medicaid Expansion) at a New Hampshire House Health and Human Services Committee hearing this morning. Here’s what he had to say:

In this polarizing election where specifics have been taking a backseat to soundbites, one issue transcends the partisan divide and unites people of all ages – Social Security. According to a new survey released today by AARP, more than nine in 10 New Hampshire primary voters across party lines and age groups say it is important for presidential candidates to lay out their plans to make Social Security financially sound for future generations.

Our first-in-the-nation primary is right around the corner and it’s time for all the Presidential candidates to Take a Stand on their plans to update Social Security for the 21st century. We need Presidential leadership to make sure Social Security is financially sound so current and future generations can receive the adequate benefits they’ve earned. And we need your help.

The New Hampshire Senior Leadership Program is now taking Senior Leadership Application 2016 for the 2016 class. A collaboration among AARP New Hampshire, Center on Aging and Community Living at UNH, and Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging, the program is designed for older adults, caregivers, family members and friends who want to advocate for older adults in New Hampshire. Application deadline is February 25.

Throughout 2015, AARP New Hampshire has been fighting for you and your family, focused on key issues you’re facing in your daily lives. Because of this work, the 173,000 family caregivers in New Hampshire have more support!

During the busy holiday season, family caregivers – over 173,000 right here in New Hampshire – already feel overwhelmed with daily responsibilities, leaving them vulnerable when the stress of the holidays arrive. Turning to unhealthy behaviors – drinking more eggnog, eating more sweets, getting fewer hours of shut-eye, and forgoing exercise – is not the answer.

Social Security needs to be updated for the 21 st century so we can keep the promise for future generations. If our leaders don’t act, future retirees could lose up to $10,000 a year. But there won’t be any progress on updating Social Security without presidential leadership.
