We often joke about memory loss but what happens when it becomes more than a senior moment? What is the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia – on the person, the caregiver, society, and the economy? And what can we do about it?
AARP and Oxford Economics recently released a report on New Hampshire’s “Longevity Economy” that shows households headed by people 50 and older generate half of the state’s gross domestic product, and over half of jobs and state taxes. Though only four in 10 of New Hampshire’s population is 50+, they generated $25 billion in consumer spending.

The nonpartisan Voters’ Guides highlight views of Shaheen, Brown, Shea-Porter, Guinta, Kuster and Garcia on Medicare, Social Security and saving for the future. Hassan and Havenstein share their views on saving for the future, family caregiving, home- and community-based services, and transportation. Voters of all ages may view the voters’ guides at www.aarp.org/yourvote.
New Hampshire ranks #46 when it comes to offering services that help keep people in their homes and communities as they age. AARP warns more must be done to change our long-term care system in order to give people the care they want and need, in the setting of their choice, at a lesser price. Nearly all – 94% -- of New Hampshire residents say they want to age at home, and not a nursing home.
AARP New Hampshire, with its 228,000 members, announces the appointment of Todd Fahey to the position of State Director. Fahey , a New Hampshire native, will provide strategic guidance to staff and volunteers, give leadership to advocacy teams, and establish and maintain networks with the business community, nonprofit sector as well as state and local government officials throughout New Hampshire. Nearly one in six Granite Staters are AARP members.
