AARP Eye Center
AARP members and guests are invited to step back in time to the vibrant and revolutionary Summer of Love in 1967, when the streets of New York City were alive with the spirit of change. This virtual event, "Summer of Love: The 1967 Hippie Takeover of NYC," offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal era of social transformation.
Starting in May 1967, New York City became a magnet for hippies drawn to its promise of community activism, communal living, natural foods, experimental theater, Eastern philosophy, musical expression, and progressive politics. This period of idealism and free love, however, was overshadowed by a tragic and highly publicized murder that fall, marking the end of an era.
Join NYC native and tour guide Linda Fisher, who, at the age of 15, left the Bronx to immerse herself in the Great Eastern “Be-In” in Central Park. Linda will lead us through a day in the life of a runaway hippie during the Summer of Love, sharing personal stories and historical insights.

- Discover the roots of the hippie movement in NYC.
- Explore the cultural and political landscape of the 1960s.
