If you’ve been a victim of identity theft or some other kind of fraud, you are not alone. Nearly 70,000 North Carolinians filed claims of fraud, identity theft or other consumer complaints with the Federal Trade Commission in 2017.

Nearly a fifth of those complaints were related to debt collection, and almost a fifth of the identity theft complaints were related to employment and taxes. In 2017, Durham-Chapel Hill ranked 43rd out of 392 metro areas nationwide in identity theft per capita.

As part of the Senior Consumer Fraud Task Force, AARP North Carolina is working with state agencies, law enforcement and other authorities to host events that can help Tar Heelers recognize and avoid scams.
