The campaign season is heating up, with races underway for governor and all 213 seats in the New York State Legislature. The AARP state office is urging members to attend public forums and debates and ask the candidates about two key issues—a proposed tax credit for family caregivers and state funding to help more New Yorkers age at home.

The state tax credit would help offset out-of-pocket costs for nearly 2.6 million unpaid family caregivers in New York who help their loved ones live at home. The funding would help about 20,000 middle-class New Yorkers who qualify for but are not receiving services such as home-delivered meals, rides to medical appointments and senior adult day care. Such services are much less expensive than taxpayer-financed nursing home care.

Primary elections will be Thursday, Sept. 13, and the general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 6.
