(Jackson, MS) – AARP has announced five organizations throughout Mississippi will receive 2025 Community Challenge grants. The grants are part of AARP’s $4.2 million commitment to fund 383 quick-action projects aimed at making communities more livable for people of all ages, with a focus on the needs of older adults. The funds will support efforts to improve public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and other key areas.

On April 24, Thayra Hausheer, an AARP Florida Executive Council Member, presented Mayor Francis Suarez and the Commissioners of the City of Miami with a recognition plaque for completing a five-year cycle and their extraordinary progress in making the City age-friendly for all its residents. Among the City’s many accomplishments, Miami initiated the Safe Routes to Age in Place program, which empowers older adults to identify their transportation needs to improve safety in their neighborhoods, including pedestrian safety. The City also focused on supporting affordable housing, working with housing providers to diversify Miami's housing options, providing rental assistance, and expanding the number of older adults who qualify. In addition, Miami is now home to a Senior Planet site to provide older adults with digital skills and connections to a range of programs and supports, and your Empower 60 program has received widespread recognition for its civic contributions to both older adults and the broader community.

Guardianship reform under the UGCOPPA act can transform the lives of Virgin Islanders. AARP VI is urging our elected officials to pass the Uniform Guardianship Act. The hearing for the Guardianship Reform Bill presented by AARP is set for hearing on May 24th in the Virgin Islands Legislature. This bill will protect and empower Virgin Islanders to have greater agency in their individual rights.
As a young lawyer in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln suffered from melancholy – what we now call depression. At the time, doctors attributed the condition to a buildup of black bile in the liver and recommended taking pills called Blue Mass, which contained mercury.
House Bill 3318, by Rep. Steve Bashore (R-Miami) and Sen. Bill Coleman (R-Ponca City), proactively prevents and prohibits unscrupulous brokers from misleading homeowners into signing decades-long agreements that give the real estate brokers the exclusive right to sell the homes.
