State lawmakers are returning to Indianapolis this month, and AARP Indiana will be advocating for older Hoosiers during the 2024 session.

Key election dates for 2024 have been set, enabling Wisconsin voters to begin sketching out their voting plans for a year that will include primary and general elections on the local, state and national levels.

With the 2024 legislative session beginning in early January, AARP Illinois is urging state lawmakers to enact a tax credit for family caregivers who incur out-of-pocket expenses. The pressure on Illinois’ family caregivers is likely to grow as the state’s population ages.

AARP is championing a plan to increase resources for family caregivers across the state. It would include the expansion of caregiver resource centers and the creation of a statewide website with evidence-based educational and training materials.

Soaring housing costs are worsening the crisis in Colorado. Most older residents want to stay in their homes, and 83 percent of Coloradans age 45-plus said being able to afford their home was an extremely or very important issue, a 2022 AARP survey shows. Legislators have failed to find a long-term approach to cutting or capping property taxes, and solutions to the crisis will be a focus of the legislative session beginning Jan. 10.

Virginia’s nursing homes are beset by inadequate staffing levels and mediocre quality, according to a new AARP scorecard on long-term care. Addressing these deficiencies will be a top priority for AARP Virginia during this year’s state legislative session, which gets underway in January.

AARP volunteers are contacting Connecticut voters to help ensure they’re aware of recent changes to election laws, including moving up the presidential primary date from the last Tuesday in April to the first Tuesday. Voters can also now cast ballots early in person.

More than half of private-sector workers in Georgia — about 2.1 million people — don’t have a workplace retirement savings plan. And more than half of respondents in a recent poll are very or somewhat anxious about having enough money for retirement.
