As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

AARP VI's Free Family Fun Day was initially set for August, but Mother Nature had other plans with heavy rain and flooding that led to its cancellation. However, nothing can keep the vibrant spirit of the Virgin Islands down! The community rallied together, and on November 8th, the celebration finally took place in a spectacular way. Families came out to enjoy a day filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable memories!
On August 21, 2025, AARP VI and the VI Department of Human Services will host the second in their series of Elder Justice Summit events. Financial professionals from across the territory and across the country have been invited to attend both in-person on St. Croix or virtually. This event focuses on fraud prevention and protection.
AARP Virginia marked Social Security’s 90th anniversary in Roanoke with cake, prizes, and stories from retirees while highlighting concerns about the program’s future funding.
AARP Virginia volunteers joined law enforcement and neighborhood watch groups on Aug. 5 to support public safety and raise awareness about the future of Social Security during National Night Out.
As the nation marked the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act, signed into law on Aug. 14, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, AARP Virginia hosted a community event to celebrate the milestone and gather public sentiment on the program’s legacy.
Majority Of Voters Say City Is Headed in the Wrong Direction; Affordability, Housing, and Safety Top Concerns
Governor JB Pritzker signed HB 1226, the Road Safety & Fairness Act into law, a bipartisan measure championed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and AARP Illinois.
The award is named after AARP Founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus and goes to the state’s top volunteer over the age of 50. The finalists include Charlie Simineo and Tim Sheppard of Cheyenne, and Sheridan’s Carla Crayton.
In Southwest Florida, one organization has a an ambitious task of uniting residents, leaders, and thought partners to tackle the region’s toughest social issues — and it's a winner of AARP's Community Challenge grant!
AARP lllinois thanks Governor JB Pritzker for signing Senate Bill 2319 into law. This landmark legislation—the Digital Asset Kiosks Act —represents a major step forward in protecting Illinois consumers, especially older adults, from fraud and abuse in the rapidly evolving digital asset marketplace.
AARP Chicago was thrilled to see some of Chicago's most iconic skyscrapers light up blue (and some also pink and yellow — historic Social Security colors) for Social Security's 90th birthday.
