Thomas Elness has been appointed as the new AARP Minnesota Director of Advocacy. Thomas brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to advocating for the needs of older adults.

This event was an opportunity for the northern Virginia community to learn about AARP’s priorities for 2025, and explain how community members can help join the advocacy effort for these changes.

When Virginia lawmakers return to Richmond in January, AARP will have four main legislative goals in mind, and the person leading the advocacy effort at the capital says AARP members can collectively make an effective force when they become involved in the process.

AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel and Medicare Rights Center President Frederic Riccardi have sent a letter to Governor Hochul urging her to sign legislation that would make it easier for New Yorkers to enroll in Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs), a move that would save eligible individuals thousands of dollars a year.

With its over 2.2 million members statewide, AARP New York has released the 2025 "AARP New York State Blueprint For Action” and is calling on the Hochul administration and state lawmakers to develop clear plans to address ageism and make New York State more age-friendly so New Yorkers 50 and over can safely, affordably, and happily grow older here.

December 2 to 6, 2024, is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week (ODSAW), a time to empower older adults to improve their safety on the nation’s roadways. This is important because – even though they are safe drivers overall – older drivers are more vulnerable to severe injury or even death when involved in a vehicle crash.

Patients in Maryland hospitals spent a median time of 247 minutes in the ER before leaving. AARP will work with a coalition of other groups on legislative steps to address the problem.
