Judges’ Choice Winner of the 2017 Caregiver Accelerator uses life experiences to help others

Two of AARP New Mexico’s volunteers were recently honored for the lasting impact their work has had in benefiting New Mexico families. Jackie Cooper, of Santa Fe, and Jaretta Faust, of Carlsbad, were recently inducted into the AARP New Mexico Hall of Fame.

At AARP, we salute and honor everyone who has served our great country. That’s why we’re proud to support veterans and their families. AARP Kentucky and KIPDA would like to show our appreciation for women veterans who have done so much to serve and protect, with a luncheon and resource fair.

AARP Illinois is working with the Chicago Sky—the city’s WNBA team—and the Fourth Ward Jewel Osco grocery store in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood to host a food drive, Dec. 11-14. The drive will benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

This fall Northern California saw some of the deadliest, most destructive wildfires in the state’s history, including wind-driven, ferocious blazes in Sonoma, Napa, Humboldt and Mendocino counties. Dozens were killed, and hundreds injured, including older and disabled adults who couldn’t escape in time.

Kentucky is home to more than 300,000 veterans, and nearly 3 out of 4 are 50-plus. AARP Kentucky is committed to supporting the needs of veterans of all generations and helping them through the transitions they face in civilian life.

AARP Kansas is hosting a series of meetings in Wichita, with coffee and conversation from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a presentation. Topics include caregiving, medication management, end-of-life planning, financial security and computer skills. Participants can learn about resources that help people continue to live at home as they age and make communities age-friendly.

AARP New Mexico State Director Gene Varela and State President Jackie Cooper recently presented Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry with a certificate formally enrolling the city into the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. The presentation was made Nov. 21 at the Barelas Senior Center.
