Summer is coming, and that means not only fun in the sun but hurricane season, as well.

Mobile, AL – AARP Alabama, with its more than 430,000 members, announces the appointment of Dorothy Dorton, MS CTRS, to the position of Associate State Director for Community Outreach. Dorton, a Mobile native, will provide outreach and support for AARP programs and initiatives in Mobile and parts of lower Alabama, working with volunteers and maintaining AARP’s relationships with residents and community leaders in that part of the state.

Recognize an exceptional Virginia volunteer!

AARP New Mexico is now accepting nominations for its 2017 AARP New Mexico Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors 50+ New Mexicans who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their community members.

AARP Pennsylvania hosted an exclusive Mayoral Roundtable on Livability & Aging in the Lehigh Valley on June 7. Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, Bethlehem Mayor Robert Donchez and Easton Mayor Sal Panto, Jr. came together with residents and community leaders to discuss how communities can prepare for an aging population and steps they are taking to make their cities more livable for residents of all ages.

Tax season is over, and AARP Tax-Aide in Utah did another outstanding job helping low-to-moderate income taxpayers in the state file their taxes at no charge and on time! This year, over 6700 returns were completed at 32 sites around the state by 106 volunteer preparers.

Over 100,000 people in Washington state live with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, and that number continues to grow. For many people with memory loss, social stigma and barriers to inclusion can lead to shame, fear, and isolation. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. We recognize that people with memory loss are a vital part of our communities, retain remarkable strengths and stories, and deserve the right to fully participate. Here in Washington state, we’re joining the worldwide movement to build dementia-friendly communities.
