Oregon Scam Jam Hits The Mark Against Fraud

As temperatures rise and Connecticut residents rely heavily on air conditioning in their homes, AARP Connecticut seeks to educate consumers on how to prepare for, and protect against, the increasing costs of electricity and other utility expenses.

Four hearings will be held in Wheeling, Princeton, Huntington, Charleston

Changes to the new WA Cares Fund also include allowing employees who live out of state and certain other groups to apply for exemptions. And the program, which was initially set to begin this year, will launch in mid-2023.

Over the course of the pandemic, using technology to connect with family and friends was a lifeline for so many, but a switch away from 3G - third-generation wireless - could leave loved ones in a lurch.

The summer months are a traditional time of higher electricity usage due to widespread use of air conditioning. Further, additional power demands mean that summer is a peak time where all sources of generation are needed, including utilities’ most expensive sources. The result is not only higher electricity bills for consumers – but the risk of blackouts when insufficient energy is available.

One third of U.S. adults say they have been targeted by scams seeking payment by gift card, according to a report by the AARP Fraud Watch Network. And nearly a quarter of consumers have given or received gift cards that had no funds on them. 

AARP Oregon is hosting a series of virtual town hall events from mid-June to mid-September to educate voters about topics such as caregiver support, age discrimination, financial security, fraud and aging in place. The state office plans to share the feedback with the candidates running for governor before the Nov. 8 election.
