Power outages, high temperatures and heat-related illnesses are threatening Texans, prompting reminders to stay safe during extreme heat. AARP Texas is urging residents to take heat-related hazards seriously and to be vigilant in checking on older residents, neighbors, and the medically vulnerable.

ALBANY, N.Y. – AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today on passage in both houses of the New York State Legislature of a bill (S.8760/A.9369) that would automatically enroll eligible older individuals receiving low-cost prescription drug benefits into a federal program that helps with utility costs.

On May 22, 2024, AARP Utah held an in-person Social Security forum at the Embassy Suites Hotel in South Jordan. We were joined by about 75 attendees as our experts discussed Social Security solvency.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler drew a smidgeon of laughter from a crowd of about 120 Central Texas AARP members when he told them that not everyone needs to give up their cars and ride city buses in HOV lanes. Rather, he said, just enough motorists should do so to speed up the lane he likes to drive.

Inflation and food insecurity are impacting many older Texans, but there are assistance programs, such as SNAP, available to help.

El Comité, a group of about 10 volunteers, was formed in 2005, and its members, based in the Denver area, serve as AARP’s eyes and ears for Colorado’s Latino community. They help sharpen AARP’s focus on pressing issues and undertake projects that affect Latino residents, who made up 22.5 percent of the state’s population in 2022.
