AARP members and their families are invited to come out to the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons on Saturday, April 7 from 10 am to 5 pm for a fun day filled with new, exciting exhibits! Stop by the AARP table and show your membership card to our volunteers for a free gift (while supplies last), and learn what AARP is doing locally in the community. Brand new exhibits include "Dinosaurs of Maryland" and a new recreational playground exhibit.
Kent Sovern of Des Moines, who has served AARP Iowa as state director since July 2011, has announced his retirement, effective June 1, 2018. Over his 47-year career, including seven in his current position, Sovern’s work has spanned many areas including organizational and business development, association management, policy advocacy, K-12 and higher education, and local government administration, leading organizations in Iowa and Minnesota and as an active volunteer in his community.
Arts Across Generations is a new AARP Blacksburg Chapter initiative. The program will take place June 1, 2018 in conjunction with Blacksburg’s Art Walk, the deadline for submissions is April 15. The program’s aim is to solicit, jury, display, and celebrate artworks created my multi-generational artists (e.g., a high school student and a grandparent; local artist and a neighbor enrolled in elementary school). Pairs do not have to be related, but at least one artist must be a resident of te New River Valley.
Scams in which fraudsters pretend to be employees of the Internal Revenue Service are the most common complaint seniors reported to the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging’s fraud hotline in 2017, according to a report released this week at a hearing. Robocalls and sweepstakes scams were second and third on the list.
As part of the fight against fraud and identity theft, AARP Idaho, Shred-it, Mountain West Bank, The Village at Meridian and Crime Stoppers of Southwest Idaho will hold a document shredding opportunity on April 7, 2018 at the Mountain West Bank branch at The Village in Meridian. The event takes place from 10am to 2pm or until the trucks are full. There is a five box limit per vehicle.
AARP's founder, Ethel Andrus, first founded the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) and, later, AARP. NRTA and AARP have always maintained a strong relationship. Many of AARP OK's 400,000 members are retired police officers, fire fighters, teachers or state employees. As such, we fully support our retired public servants.
