March is Women’s History Month — a time to focus not just on the past, but on the challenges women continue to face. Age-Friendly Macon-Bibb is celebrating their milestone of continuous improvements as indicated by the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. Their designation as the country's first Age-Friendly Community was approved in 2012 by the World Health Organization and AARP. This network serves as a catalyst to educate, encourage, promote and recognize improvements that make communities supportive for residents of all ages. The network provides U.S. cities, towns, and counties with the resources to become more Age-Friendly by tapping into national and global research, planning models, and best practices.

AARP Louisiana State Director Denise Bottcher has announced the appointment of Bobby G. Savoie as State President- the highest state level volunteer position within the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. AARP Louisiana has nearly 500,000 members statewide.

While it’s still a work in progress, the broad outline of proposed health care reforms is coming into focus in Congress. The measure as currently drafted holds huge ramifications for all Americans, including here in North Carolina. Many of those ramifications come from proposals to change Medicaid from its current form into a block grant program.

Macon-Bibb County becomes the first community to receive a five-year renewal as part of the worldwide network of Age-Friendly Communities. Tomorrow, AARP will acknowledge Macon-Bibb’s commitment and its multi-year plan to enhance accessibility, convenience, and, ultimately, become more user-friendly for all ages.

A new AARP survey shows that an overwhelming percentage (84 percent) of American private sector workers “strongly or somewhat agree” that officials should back legislation to enable workers “to save their own money for retirement.”

With a snip of the ribbon, AARP officially became a part of the Atwater Resource Center in Wichita's District 1. On Saturday, March 4, AARP State Director Maren Turner and AARP Volunteer State President Glenda DuBoise joined with Wichita Vice-Mayor LaVonta Williams, City Manager Robert Layton, Atwater Community Representative Kameelah Alexander and members of the Wichita Council of Elders to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
