This past Election Day, AARP was proud to celebrate the passage of “The Los Angeles County Transportation Plan”, or Measure M. This ballot initiative is poised to deliver over $120 billion dollars’ worth of transit improvement projects that will relieve traffic across the region, fix sidewalks and potholes, and improve our quality of life. ( Read more here.) Now that the campaign is over, we’re hard at work at assembling an action plan to ensure that Measure M benefits AARP members across the County’s 88 cities. This week, we celebrated Measure M’s passage with our volunteers, and discussed the official launch of our special Los Angeles County transportation advocacy team. This team will be “in the know” about opportunities to speak up with your voice and help shape how Measure M dollars are spent in your communities. We’ll tell you all about the big meetings to attend and which elected representatives to contact. If you’d like to join this team, click here.
" We will introduce a new administrator to you, once she or he is chosen," or words to that effect, spoken to the residents of my ALF by the Big Boss.
There is nothing like an aroma from childhood to make one feel at home, and so it’s not surprising that Luul and Tekle, who were both born in Eritrea, love to make African coffee from scratch including roasting the beans themselves on the stovetop. Another nod to their roots is the picture of an African nomad and family in their living room who are also enjoying the delicious brew.
The Georgia Power of Attorney statute currently lacks specific language as to the fiduciary duties of the agent. Recently, Georgia State Representative Chuck Efstration introduced HB 221, which provides clearer language on legal rights of the person being represented, and protections for banks and third parties who accept the representation that there is a valid Power of Attorney in good faith. This proposed legislation will allow law enforcement and prosecutors further clarity for when someone is being financially exploited, which would help protect vulnerable adults and provide their caregivers with the tools they need to make important financial decisions. On Thursday, February 16 at 7:05pm, join our live discussion about important work taking place which will impact Power of Attorney law in Georgia. State Representative Chuck Efstration and other policy experts will discuss efforts to update this important effort. Click here to register for the event (registration is required for participation). Click here to contact your elected officials and urge them to support this important effort.

Marie Knapp knows what it’s like to be lonesome. As someone who has moved frequently, she has felt what she calls “the sting of loneliness” that comes with a new town. Born in Haiti and adopted by a couple from the United States, Marie spent her childhood moving around Michigan with her family, who often had to relocate for her dad’s job. Once Marie graduated from high school, she continued to move—Georgia, Mississippi, Ghana, and Jamaica, among many other locations. Upon moving to Minneapolis in 2015, Marie decided to get to know her new community by reaching out to seniors who are at risk of the isolation and loneliness like she’d felt before.
Ads for jobs guaranteeing you will make a certain amount of money or that you can work from home are probably scams. If you respond to the ad, you’ll likely be asked to send money so you can either get the job, acquire more job listings, receive supplies to start a business at home, or obtain special “certification” that’s supposed to get you a job. If an ad for a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
