AARP Utah is encouraging members to guard against identity theft by disposing of sensitive documents. Free shredding events are scheduled July 16, 8-11 a.m., in Ogden and the Midvale area of Salt Lake City.
Doesn't dancing under the stars to music provided by top Utah big bands such as City Jazz, Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band, Wasatch Jazz Project, Tad Calcara & New Deal Swing, 23rd Army Band and the Joe Muscolino Band sound like a great time? Throw in free dance classes and food trucks from the Food Truck League and you have the ingredients for a wonderful evening. Big Band Summer at the Gallivin Center will run every Tuesday night throughout June, July, and August.

James Thibodeau, Senior Counsel with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will be giving two presentations, "Investing for Seniors" and "Pyramid Schemes" on May 24th from 6:00pm--7:30pm at AARP Utah's office. The general public is invited to join us--you need not be a member of AARP or 50+ to attend.
Dementia doesn't come with an instruction manual, but the Alzheimer's Association has a series of events during Making Sense of Alzheimer's Month that can help! On Tuesday, May 3, they will be holding an Education Conference in Park City with topics that include effective communications strategies, understanding and responding to dementia-related behaviors, and available community resources and services.
Hartford Change AGEnts is proud to present "Portrait of a Caregiver," a dramatic and moving play based on the real-life experiences and interviews of 22 Utah caregivers. "Portrait of a Caregiver" was created through a partnership of the University of Utah College of Nursing, the Utah Caregiver Support Program, and the Hartford Change AGEnts Initiative that aims to bring awareness to the needs of family caregivers who provide the majority of long-term care in Utah and are seldom prepared for this role.

Utahns will have the opportunity to attend caregiving conferences in Orem and Ogden in November. On Saturday, November 7 from 10:00 am--2:30 pm the Mountainland Area Agency on Aging will hold its 10th Annual Caregiver Conference at the Orem Friendship Center. Admission is free and includes a light breakfast and lunch, as well as a keynote presentation on Understanding Alzheimer's and sessions on community resources, confessions of a hospice nurse, and finding joy in being a caregiver. AARP Utah's popular Real Possibilities University will be in Cedar City on October 8 at the Hunter Conference Center on the Southern Utah University campus, featuring speakers on brain fitness and financial fraud. Dr. Kevin Duff of the University of Utah's Brain Institute will discuss how to keep your brain sharp, recognizing signs of dementia, and recent research on memory loss and how to prevent it. Keith Woodwell, Director of the Utah Division of Securities, will outline financial fraud, scams in Utah, and what to do if you suspect you are a fraud target. Time will be allotted for questions from the audience for both speakers.
