Social Security was signed into law in 1935, and August 14th marks the 90th Anniversary. AARP Virgin Islands encouraged Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. to sign a proclamation marking August 14, 2025 as Social Security Day in the US Virgin Islands to honor this incredible achievement.

A new AARP survey, released in conjunction with Social Security’s 90th anniversary, confirms that Americans highly value Social Security, and even more so than five years ago. The vast majority of Americans – 95% of Republicans, 98% of Democrats, and 93% of Independents – consider Social Security vital to the financial security of all Americans, and 67% believe it is even more important for retirees than it was five years ago.

AARP stands with individuals with disabilities, their families, and caregivers in support of policies that promote independence, financial security, and quality of life. As an organization dedicated to empowering individuals as they age, AARP represents the interests of over 100 million Americans aged 50 and over, including the more than 22,000 members living here in the Virgin Islands. AARP urged the committee to act in favor for advancing the financial security for disabled Virgin Islanders and their families, by ultimately passing this legislation.

In a tourist area like the Virgin Islands, where millions of people visit annually, Virgin Islanders are always at high risk for acquiring the latest version of influenza going around. And, influenza is known to be a rapid killer of those who are elderly, very young or immunosuppressed.

En Español Many of us know that caregiving is a challenging task that can be physically tedious, emotionally draining, and unbelievably exasperating. Those in the know would agree it can be one of the most difficult things one can do during their lifetime.
Since 2004 AARP Chapter 4777 members from the islands of St. John have been partnering with the American Legion Post 131, and various VI business and civic organizations to demonstrate their appreciation to disabled military veterans in a big way.
Newly elected Chairman of the VI Government Employees Service Commission, (GESC), Beverly Joseph, advises government employees and retirees that “sickness comes at any hour and it makes no sense to put off essential medical services that could prevent serious illness or even death.”

Español AARP Virgin Islands is generally known for multi-tasking and our recently launched AARP VI Digital Coach Program is no exception. This new program comes under AARP national’s broader program entitled Mentor Up.
Retirees from the St. Croix Government Retirees, Inc. (SCGR), which includes AARP members on St. Croix, are diligently working to support Senator Nereida Rivera-O’Reilly’s Bill Number 31-0016 which will resolve a long-standing political and funding issue related to the VI Government’s negotiations to purchase employee and retiree health insurance coverage.
Washington, DC – On February 20, 2015, Vera M. Falu of St. Croix, Virgin Islands participated in the graduation ceremony for the AARP’s Volunteer Leadership Institute or VLI. She was joined by 32 other exceptional volunteers from all across the country. Richard Harwood, founder and president of the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, was a guest speaker.
