AARP Virginia had fun on purpose at Almost Christmas, Movies for Grownups screening. A total of 70 guests shared laughs, popcorn and bottled H2O at the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center. The movie was a chance for AARP members and non-members to enjoy an afternoon free of the holiday shopping frenzy. This event allowed AARP Southeast Virginia to introduce all the great ways the 50+ plus community can be engaged and empowered through campaigns and events.
December 13, 2017 — AARP arranged a dinner for members and guests at the FireFlies restaurant in Del Ray, a quaint historic neighborhood in greater Alexandria. The dinner was a chance for AARP members to catch-up with each other on the busy season and introduce guests to AARP Northern Virginia volunteering opportunities. Bernice Countenay coordinated this event for 28 people, and was assisted by Nancy Crespo, Effie Upshaw, Gaile Harrell, and Reed Eldridge. This was the 5 th dinner evening offered in 2017 by AARP at FireFlies and is a companion to the dinner evenings also being held at Mylo’s restaurant in McLean, Virginia. These community events give the public a chance learn how AARP is making a difference in northern Virginia.
AARP Volunteers were awarded for their exemplary efforts at the 2017 All Volunteer Assembly (AVA). Devoted to honoring AARP Virginia’s most dedicated volunteers, this year’s AVA highlighted individuals committed to community service and helping everyone age with dignity and purpose.
AARP is hosting brain health seminars throughout Northern Virginia to explain how smart habits and social interaction can sharpen your mind. The community meetings will focus on five pillars of brain health: diet, regular exercise, social engagement, relaxation and learning new things.
Richmond, VA -- A diverse group of multidisciplinary college students from across the Commonwealth gathered to address the often overlooked issue of caregiver health and wellness at the 2017 “Caring for the Caregiver Intercollegiate Hack” hosted by VirginiaNavigator’s Lindsay Institute for Innovations in Caregiving.
