AARP Virginia recently held telephone town halls with the candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives for District 7.

In the upcoming General Election, Virginians will vote for President, U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Whether you are voting early in person, voting absentee, or voting on Election Day, there are five questions your candidates should answer before you cast your ballot:

The first time I voted was in 1968 when Richard Nixon was running against Hubert Humphrey. I was a young woman married to my husband who was in the Army in Vietnam. I was living at home with my parents in Philadelphia while he served overseas. It was an intense time in the country, as the nation was polarized about the war and so was I. There were protests everywhere, including in Philadelphia. I remember watching the horrific pictures of the war in the evenings with my parents and thinking how unjust and awful this war was but also praying that my husband would survive the war and we would be united again.

RICHMOND, VA – The Center for Voter Information recently mailed absentee ballot applications to Virginia residents. The Virginia Department of Elections has no affiliation with this group nor coordinates with any third party groups on campaign efforts. We are aware that voters in multiple localities that received an absentee ballot application were given pre-paid return envelopes addressed to the incorrect registrar’s office. The Virginia Department of Elections encourages all voters that would like to receive an absentee ballot for the November election to apply electronically on our website www.elections.virginia.gov/voterinformation. Any applications that arrive in the wrong locality's office will be forwarded immediately to the correct office for processing. If you have already applied for an absentee ballot, you do not need to submit a new application. The first day that absentee ballots will be mailed is September 18, 2020. Other inquiries regarding this mailing can be directed to the Center for Voter Information.

New laws allow voting by absentee ballot up to 45 days before an election, eliminating previous rules that required voters to have an accepted excuse to vote absentee.

RICHMOND — AARP Virginia today asked Attorney General Mark Herring to waive the witness requirement for absentee ballots for the November 3 General Election, as he has done for the June 23 primaries. The official letter can be read here.
