vernor Shapiro’s state budget proposal included an increase of $20 million for the PENNCARE line item, which is the funding that supports older adults in their communities through local Area Agencies on Aging. While we sincerely appreciate the proposed increase, it is not enough to ensure that older adults receive the services and supports they need to age in place. More is needed — $30 million — to serve a growing aging population at home, where they want to be. According to AARP’s latest “Home and Community Preferences Survey,” older adults overwhelmingly want to stay in their homes (75 percent) and communities (73 percent).
On behalf of our nearly 300,000 members across Philadelphia and all those 50-plus who call Philadelphia ‘home,’ we applaud the Mayor and members of City Council for agreeing on a budget that advances affordable housing and safe streets initiatives, along with programs and services that will help every Philadelphian live and age well in their homes and communities. As the local advocate in Philadelphia, our AARP Philadelphia Age-Friendly and Livable Communities Action Plan supports the efforts of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities to be great places for people of all ages.
