MASON CITY – At Governor Terry Branstad’s ceremony today signing Senate File 446 into law, AARP recognized Iowa’s bipartisan legislative leadership and action on behalf of the health and well-being of all Iowans with creation of the Iowa Health and Wellness Plan.
Today AARP volunteers and staff from Iowa and every other state in the nation visited Capitol Hill today to express opposition to the President’s proposed Social Security benefit cut known as Chained CPI and to support responsible solutions to strengthen Medicare. In meetings with members of the entire Iowa Congressional delegation and their staffs, including Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Tom Harkin, Rep. Bruce Braley, Rep. Dave Loebsack, Rep. Tom Latham and Rep. Steve King, AARP leaders urged the delegation to have a separate debate on Social Security and to back specific proposals that would strengthen Medicare and the health care system overall.

Today, AARP expressed support for protecting funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as the Senate prepares to consider reauthorization of the Farm Bill. “While AARP recognizes the economic challenges facing our nation and that burdens must be shouldered by broad segments of society, we do not believe it’s appropriate to reduce already inadequate Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits - $4.30 per person per day - to households experiencing food insecurity," said Joyce Rogers, AARP Senior Vice President, Government Affairs.
