NORFOLK - The Virginia General Assembly has passed a resolution designating April in 2016 and in each succeeding year as Advance Care Planning Month in Virginia. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe is expected to sign the measure.
AARP Virginia state advocacy volunteers are fighting for Virginians age 50+ at the General Assembly, especially those who help take care of older relatives.
When lawmakers arrived at the Virginia General Assembly on Opening Day, our team of volunteer advocates were right there sharing our legislative priorities with them. We are requesting passage of legislation that will permit advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to have full practice authority. AARP Virginia is also advocating for more than $2 million to fund the state Long-Term Care Ombudsman program, more funding for a state respite care program that assists family caregivers, and for legislation to protect older Virginians from financial exploitation.
Is a family nurse practitioner your primary health care provider? Have you given birth with the assistance of a nurse midwife? Or have you had surgery with anesthesia administered by a nurse anesthetist?
AARP believes family caregivers aren’t celebrated nearly enough. Older parents, spouses and other loved ones can remain in their homes because their caregivers are dedicated to keeping them safe. AARP is fighting for more support, help at home, workplace protections, training, and more.
Virgil Cook of Blacksburg was recently bestowed the Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP’s highest volunteer honor. During his acceptance speech at a banquet in Staunton, Cook reflected upon the numerous volunteers who helped him throughout his life. They serve as his inspiration for giving back to others.
