It takes a village to stage an amazing event like AARP's Life@50+, and we've got quite the village of volunteers ready to take on the task! More than 1,000 volunteers will be a part of the first spring event in Las Vegas, 5/30-6/1/2013! Several hundred of them joined AARP Nevada and national event staff for volunteer orientation sessions at the Las Vegas Convention Center earlier this week.
AARP Nevada State Director Carla Sloan has announced the appointment of Mary Liveratti as state president. A former deputy director of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and 24-year veteran of the Nevada Division for Aging and Disability Services, Liveratti brings a wealth of experience working with programs and services for older Nevadans, as well as a lifelong commitment to volunteerism.
During the 2013 legislative session, Nevada AARP is working for you: to protect home and community based services; provide legal protections for family caregivers; support access to quality, affordable health care and strengthen protections from fraudulent and abusive business practices. You can get involved and make your voice heard by joining our Legislative Posse! We'll send you special alerts about hearings, activities and ways you can take action during the legislative session.
They're in the community every day - volunteering, making a difference, lending their time and talent to help others in need. They are often unsung heroes, working and giving without recognition or thanks - just because it's the right thing to do. AARP Nevada seeks to recognize these community leaders through the Andrus Award for Community Service. Each year, the Andrus Award recognizes volunteers who have made their communities better in ways that support AARP's mission and vision, and that inspire others to volunteer.
The annual NASCAR weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of the most anticipated events of the year, bringing racing fans from around the globe to southern Nevada. But this year in addition to the motor sports fans and tourism dollars, the races helped bring needed assistance to Nevada seniors facing the threat of hunger, via a unique AARP program.
For most people, it's not exactly the most wonderful time of the year! Tax time can bring anxiety, stress and even dread as you pull together documents and records and prepare to file. But even if you've put off filing your return until the final weeks, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program can help! An army of expert volunteers has mobilized to assist Nevadans in preparing their taxes. This free service is available through April 14 at dozens of sites across the Silver State, from Laughlin to Elko and everywhere in-between.
