AARP Georgia in collaboration with In the Life Atlanta is screening the film, Brother Outsider illuminating the life and work of Bayard Rustin, a visionary activist and strategist who has been called “the unknown hero” of the civil rights movement. A tireless crusader for justice, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the legendary 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
We are seeking people, who wish to help others, and we will provide complete, free training for qualified applicants in the following roles:
A kick off/press conference is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 11am at the Historic Terminal Station, 700 Poplar Street. AARP Georgia is collaborating with the Macon-Bibb Sheriff’s Department to encourage local community members to participate in “Americas’ Night Out Against Crime.” In support of this event, AARP Georgia will provide a Fraud Watch Network workshop on August 5, 12:30pm at the Douglass Theatre, 355 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. During the workshop, performances will be provided by local youth from Phillips Performing Arts, Inc. Neighborhood events and activities will take place from 6pm-9pm. AARP will be at select locations distributing important information about fraud prevention. The goal of the evening is to help the community learn more about trends and the behaviors con artists use on their victims, con artist playbook, resources on scams, and frauds and how to spot scams & frauds.
Bridging the Digital Divide is the aim of the AARP T.E.K. (technology, education, knowledge) program in Georgia. Each free session/workshop is structured with a main instructor providing the tutorial and teaching with individual TEK Guides providing one-on-one instruction. Attendees will learn touchscreen basics, applications, photo sharing, texting, video chat, and more.
AARP Georgia realizes identity theft is a major problem in our state. According to the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection, in 2012, Georgia was the state with the second greatest number of complaints related to identity theft filed with the Federal Trade Commission.
Recent reports state that six in 10 women are unsure how they will pay for long-term care. By learning about long-term care options, women can take steps today that may help them live better in the future. AARP helps Georgia women take charge of the decisions affecting their lives by hosting a Decide. Create. Share.℠ workshop on Thursday, August 14, from 10am-12pm at the KROC Center, 1833 Broad Street, Augusta. The session is in conjunction with Central Savanah River Area (CSRA) and AAA.
Georgia still needs to make substantial improvements when it comes to meeting the long-term care needs of older residents and supporting their family members and loved ones who care for them. This, according to a new, comprehensive state-by-state Scorecard from AARP with support of the nation’s leading organizations behind quality long-term care, The Commonwealth Fund and SCAN Foundation.
