AARP New York Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy David McNally issued the following statement today in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s expected designation of John Rhodes as the new chairman of the utility-regulating State Public Service Commission (PSC) and the filling of vacancies to the five-member commission. The State Senate last night confirmed Mr. Rhodes, Jim Alesi and Philip Wilcox as new PSC commissioners and re-confirmed Diane Burman for an additional term:
Earlier this month, 13 AARP members and volunteers helped collect more than 1,000 pounds in food donations for Nassau County veterans service agency VetMart. Volunteers stood outside the entrance to the Carl Place Stop&Shop and encouraged patrons to pick up a few extra items for the food drive while they did their usual shopping. The outpouring of generosity and compassion from the community was incredible - Donations came in by the bagful! Some shoppers handed over more in donations than they’d bought for themselves, while others ran back into the store for a second round of shopping once they realized there was a food drive.
AARP is PRIDE. That is why we will be marching in this year’s New York City Pride March in Governor Cuomo’s contingent. The March will take place this year on Sunday June 25th. If you are interested in marching with us, register here.

AARP Long Island is so proud to partner with The Gateway, Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County, which presents the best in live theatrical entertainment both at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport Village as well as the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on Main Street in Patchogue Village. This will be their 68th season of live, professional theatre at The Gateway.
The AARP Oyster Bay volunteer team held a food drive earlier this year to benefit St. Kilian Parish Social Ministry. The St. Kilian food pantry provides food and basic needs to hundreds of people each month. We thank the pantry for allowing us to stock the pantry on a Saturday when they are usually closed. This enabled us to collect the donations on a busier shopping day and for more hours. “Wow, wow, wow!” said Nina Petersen, St. Kilian Outreach Director, after seeing all the donations we collected.
