A new AARP survey, released in conjunction with Social Security’s 90th anniversary, confirms that Americans highly value Social Security, and even more so than five years ago. The vast majority of Americans – 95% of Republicans, 98% of Democrats, and 93% of Independents – consider Social Security vital to the financial security of all Americans, and 67% believe it is even more important for retirees than it was five years ago.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate one of the most enduring and impactful programs in American history: Social Security! That’s right, August 14th marks 90 years since Social Security was signed into law in 1935. And like any good nonagenarian, it’s got stories to tell, wisdom to share, a whole lot of people who are grateful for its existence and it needs our care.

Government is broken. Politicians don't seek common ground. They cast insults instead of creating results. It's time for our elected leaders to put voters first and get to work. This November, critical issues like Medicare, Social Security, caregiving, prescription drugs and financial security are all on the line. AARP is urging all New Jerseyans to use your vote to hold politicians accountable and make them pay attention to the nation's most powerful voting bloc - the 50+.
AARP, in collaboration with the City of Perth Amboy and the Perth Amboy Police Department, will be hosting a Shred Event and Prescription Medication Take-Back Day. Over half of New Jersey workers – 1. 7 million people - do not have access to a retirement savings plan through their employer. [1] Programs such as Social Security are critical to retirement security but do not provide enough for an individual to depend on during their retirement. The average Social Security benefit for a 65+ family is about $19,000 a year, though on average older New Jersey families spend $23,000 a year of food, utilities, and health care alone. [2] The math is clear…..New Jersey families cannot rely on Social Security alone for a secure financial future.
