AARP OHIO CELEBRATES BLACK HISTOR Y MONTH
Northeast Ohio resident Semanthie Brooks, ACSW, LISW, has recently been appointed to the AARP Ohio Executive Council. Executive Council members are appointed volunteers, who work with the Ohio office and other volunteers to provide ongoing strategic direction for state activities in support of AARP priority issues framed by the AARP National Board of Directors.
Earlier this month we were thrilled to collaborate with the Alpha Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. (AKA), the nation’s oldest predominately African American sorority, to present six screenings of Hidden Figures in Cleveland.

Here in Columbus our office overlooks the Ohio Statehouse and today, even with the frigid effects of the record-breaking polar vortex, the turnout to pay respect to Ohio’s own Honorable Senator John Glenn is a steady stream, expected to reach the thousands before the evening is over. AARP Ohio joins the nation and especially our great state of Ohio, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of Senator Glenn.
As members of the the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, Cleveland and Columbus are addressing environmental, economic and social factors that affect the health and well-being of older adults.
If you have always wanted to tour the beautiful, mystic historical churches of downtown Dayton, now is your chance. This tour will start at Westminster Presbyterian Church and proceed to First Baptist Church, three blocks from Westminster. You’ll drive to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and we will dismiss at the Dayton Art Institute where you will receive a $10 coupon (while supplies last) that can be used for the current exhibition, the gift shop, or the coffee shop.
As a presidential campaign battleground state and host to the Republican National Convention, Ohio has an opportunity to put the spotlight on candidates. AARP staff and volunteers are crisscrossing the state, urging candidates to explain their plans to keep Social Security in top financial shape and to take a leadership role on the issue.
