Extra support from a caring older adult helps children thrive academically. AARP Experience Corps is an intergenerational program that focuses on helping children become great readers before finishing third grade. Metropolitan Family Service, a non-profit serving the Portland area, is actively recruiting volunteers who are 50+ for the AARP Foundation Experience Corps program to tutor children in select Eastside, North Portland and Milwaukie public schools.
The AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first program specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older. An evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit as a result of what they learned. We had a chance to speak with Oregon Driver’s Safety State Coordinator, Craig Bussey, about his volunteer involvement and what courses are on the horizon in the coming months.
Many Oregonians are eligible to buy health insurance through the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace. You might be able to save money on premiums, thanks to expanded federal tax credits in the March coronavirus relief bill. Because of the pandemic, the Marketplace’s enrollment window is open through Aug. 15.
