What happens when you can no longer drive or get out of the home? What happens when doing the simple things that help us remain independent, like getting to the store for weekly groceries, becomes a major challenge? According to AARP research, 90% of people ages 45+ say they want to remain in their own home as long as possible. But being able to live independently is a challenge for many older adults and people with disabilities. That is where an organization like Store to Door comes in! AARP Oregon has been working with Store to Door’s Executive Director Kiersten Ware and her team this year on our food security outreach efforts and we have become great fans of their work. We asked Kiersten about her non-profit in a recent interview.

It usually starts small – perhaps running a few errands or preparing some meals. Maybe you don’t even see yourself as a caregiver yet. Sometime the changes can be sudden and dramatic. But as your loved ones age, they may need more help. And, perhaps you will too. A little planning ahead can make a big difference in your life. Join AARP Oregon and community partners for upcoming educational forums to help maximize future independence and quality of life.

Did you know that Oregon drivers are responsible for traveling approximately 33.1 billion vehicle miles every year! What would you do if you could not drive? Thankfully driving is not the only way to get around!
AARP Oregon has been a longtime supporter of the Money Management Programs here in Oregon. Easter Seals Oregon, the Oregon Department of Human Services and community service agencies work together to deliver the Oregon Money Management Program around the state. Trained volunteers help low-income older adults with daily money management tasks and make a difference in people’s lives by helping them remain as independent as possible. In as little as two-hours per month volunteers can help create financial stability, prevent homelessness, promote independence, and stop financial abuse, eviction, utility cut off, and loss of independence.
Do you enjoy great music? AARP Oregon is excited to be joining Villages NW for a series of fun evenings filled with music, friendship and doing good.
