AARP Texas Director Bob Jackson released the following statement today in reaction to the news of the passing of Luis Alonso Wilmot of San Antonio, who served as the AARP Texas Director from 2002 to 2007:

For more than 60 years, AARP has been a 'wise friend' and 'fierce defender' helping individuals to ensure that their money, health, and happiness live as long as they do.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler drew a smidgeon of laughter from a crowd of about 120 Central Texas AARP members when he told them that not everyone needs to give up their cars and ride city buses in HOV lanes. Rather, he said, just enough motorists should do so to speed up the lane he likes to drive.

Our state is aging. By the year 2031, there will be more people over the age of 65 than under 18. North Carolina and its communities need to be prepared. To accomplish this, AARP needs to be focused with strong, thoughtful leadership at the helm.

Demarcus Andrews of Durham, NC, has joined AARP North Carolina as Associate State Director of Advocacy. Among his responsibilities will be working with AARP Advocates and others to help advance state legislation and policy proposals to meet the needs of North Carolinians as they age.

The 2019 session of the Texas Legislature resulted in passage of bills that AARP Texas is calling on Governor Greg Abbott to sign into law to improve the wellbeing of older Texans and other consumers.

Approaching the end of the 2019 Texas legislative session, AARP Texas leaders are applauding lawmakers on their successful work for older Texans and other consumers.

AARP’s purpose is to empower people to choose how they live as they age. Many policy changes enacted this legislative session will help Connecticut residents do just that.

Contractor fraud and home improvement scams can cost homeowners thousands of dollars and leave them with shoddy workmanship, unfinished projects, or even damage to their homes. Scammers often target older adults, but anyone can fall victim to these scams.
