The season of giving brings about holiday cheer that so many are thrilled to celebrate. With Christmas right around the corner we know everyone is busy finding the perfect gifts for loved ones, decorating trees with ornaments, and spending quality time with family. With all those never ending to-do lists and bargain hunting, many are unaware of the possibility of fraud and scams. Unfortunately, amidst all of the wonderful festivities, some people on Santa’s ”naughty list” are ready to catch you off guard. The season of giving also attracts scammers looking for their next victim. AARP has you covered on different ways to avoid holiday scams, so that you can remain merry.

AARP Louisiana has a Speakers Bureau whose volunteers give presentations on topics such as fraud prevention, caregiving, health care, veterans resources and more.
A state task force is considering ways to help more workers in New Mexico save for retirement. According to a 2016 study, more than half of private-sector workers in the state do not have a way to save for their future through payroll deductions.
A landmark law aims to help about 154,000 unpaid family caregivers in the state to remain in the workforce while helping their parents, spouses or other relatives age in place.
Thousands of older Alaskans stand to lose crucial assistance from a program that is due to expire in 2018. When the legislature convenes Jan. 16, AARP Alaska will be backing a bill to extend the state’s Senior Benefits Program, which provides cash assistance to more than 11,000 low-income Alaskans 65 and older.
In the legislative session that begins Jan. 8, AARP Idaho is urging state lawmakers to pass the Idaho Family Caregiver Act, which would help caregivers confidently perform medical or nursing tasks when a loved one comes home from a hospital stay. The bill would let every hospital patient designate a family caregiver and would require hospitals to make reasonable efforts to show those caregivers how to perform follow-up care.
