While some of us are still putting away holiday decorations, our elected representatives and a myriad of advocates - including AARP – are preparing for January 14, when the 105-day state legislative session begins. This year, we have our sights focused on providing relief for vulnerable homeowners, and helping Washingtonians better prepare for their future long-term care and retirement security needs.

Legislation would help Iowa’s 317,000 family caregivers

In honor of Black History Month, we are proud to feature a personal story from our former state pres ident Clarence "Tiger" Davis. Tiger reflects upon his experiences as a black Vietnam veteran reintegrating into a society that did not wholeheartedly welcome him with open arms. However, despite the racism and violence cast on to people that looked like him, he still stood tall for his country. He believed in America and despite the hostility at home, wanted to serve and protect its democracy.

In honor of Black History Month, AARP California is encouraging you to pass on your stories, your knowledge and your love as part of our month-long focus on family legacy. Throughout the month we will be highlighting Californian grandparents and their efforts to share stories and build legacy with their grandbabies. This week we interviewed Arthur and Lana Rasberry, aka Papa and Nani, of Fairfield about their relationship with 7-year-old Bryce and 5-year-old Riley.

After nearly two decades of implementing legislative and regulatory policies, it is time to provide consumers with the ultimate protection from the confusing – often abusive and illegal – marketing tactics of third-party electric suppliers. Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz, in collaboration with AARP and other consumer advocates, as well as U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, called for the end of the third-party residential electric market that economically harms consumers at a press conference today.

AARP Oklahoma livability surveys for the communities of Tulsa, Norman, Shawnee and Vinita have been extended to be open until February 28. The surveys will gather community feedback to determine attitudes and opinions on a variety of topics, such as housing, outdoor spaces, transportation and streets, health and wellness, social participation, educational opportunities, volunteering and civic engagement and job opportunities.

Tonight, when we tell our grandbabies a bedtime story…don’t tell them a fairy tale. Instead, pass on the stories of real African American heroes…from a man who started a movement with a dream, to a woman who helped put astronauts into space. The 2019 Vision Zero Legislative Breakfast was held on January 31 to present state and city legislative opportunities to make Philadelphia streets safer in 2019. Hosted by AARP Pennsylvania, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, and Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia, the event was well attended by state and city representatives, business leaders and advocates.
