Mary Louse Embrey’s 94-year old father was an active family man. When a variety of health conditions got the best of him, caring for him became complicated. He wanted to stay in his own home, which the whole family fully embraced and made happen. Soon enough, Mary Louise became challenged by balancing her work schedule and family life while helping to care for her two young children.

As AARP’s National Volunteer President, I am so proud to be associated with all of our volunteers in the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

We wanted to give you an early heads up that the AARP Volunteer Portal will undergo a "facelift" in early August. Building on feedback from volunteer and staff users, the updated Portal will offer an improved user experience and enhanced key features. It will ultimately mean fewer clicks, increased functionality and easier access to the information you need!

According to a recent survey from AARP Iowa of nearly 400 Cedar Rapids residents age 50 and older, nine out of 10 say that the city rates “good” or better for aging in place in the community. In addition, 88 percent of survey respondents expressed that aging in their own homes is either “very” or “extremely” important to them. AARP is looking to designate Cedar Rapids as its next ‘age-friendly’ city in Iowa.

The University of Lynchburg's Board Center on Aging will be hosting the 2019 Annual Conference on Aging. The conference, held on June 4 2019, will cover material on aging well in mind, body, and spirit. Author Ron Culberson will participate as a keynote speaker discussing working on achieving goals and enjoying a fulfilling life. The conference will also feature a keynote speech from Virginia Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services Commissioner, Kathryn A. Hayfield, providing an overview of programs available as well as Virginia's future direction on aging.

As we approach spring and the second season of 2019, AARP members and their guests are reminded that they can save money on tickets to hear stories by ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the second half of their lives as part of the 2ND ACT speaker series at Waterbury’s Palace Theater.

AARP Oklahoma has recognized four legislative leaders who have significantly contributed to AARP’s mission of empowering people to choose how they age and live independently with dignity and purpose. The 2019 AARP Legislative Leadership awards were presented to State Sen. Kim David (R) of Porter, State Sen. Stephanie Bice (R) of Oklahoma City, State Rep. Harold Wright (R) of Weatherford and State Rep. Tammy West (R) of Bethany during the annual AARP Oklahoma Advocacy Day at the Oklahoma Capitol on March 14.
