In an AARP survey of New York City voters age 50-plus, nearly half (48 percent) said they had experienced or witnessed age discrimination in the workplace or when seeking a job. These respondents said they either personally experienced discrimination or knew someone who—because of age—was not hired, was passed over for a raise or promotion, was laid off or forced out of a job, was encouraged or forced to retire before being ready or was the brunt of disparaging remarks.
When Ron Carlberg commits to something, he’s in it for the long haul.
Was it a jazz set, a networking event or a conversation about entrepreneurship? It was all three as AARP DC recently presented “Life Reimagined for Work” at Takoma Station Tavern in northwest Washington, DC. More than 200 people heard holiday jazz from DC native Marcus Johnson, a Grammy-nominated musician, composer, and entrepreneur. Marcus blended his music with motivational advice for rethinking how individuals can approach work. The Small Business Administration (SBA) and SCORE were co-sponsors for this unique evening of jazz and networking.
Cincinnati residents can get free help filing their state and federal taxes at about 20 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites Feb. 3 to April 15. Volunteer tax preparers are trained and IRS-certified. About 100 volunteers will staff the sites. Over 40 additional sites are available throughout Southwest Ohio.
We have big plans in Cincinnati next year, and you can be part of the fun! In 2014, AARP members throughout the Cincinnati area will be invited to participate in a variety of events, including educational, volunteer and local event discounts for educational and cultural offerings.
