Each year, AARP Connecticut honors the outstanding achievements of individual AARP volunteers who, through their efforts and leadership, have contributed to fulfilling the organization’s mission and vision. Please consider nominating your outstanding peers for one of our annual awards.
Portland is known nationally as a great example of a livable urban environment. Ranked the most livable small city in the country by Money Magazine, Portland prides itself for its great public transportation system, local parks, connected neighborhoods with pedestrian-friendly shop-lined streets, and a thriving local arts culture. Today, as a member of the WHO Global and AARP Age-Friendly Livable Networks, Portland is making greater headway as a place to live, work and play for people of ALL ages and abilities.
Curtis Hanson, a nine-year Instructor volunteer with AARP-Oregon Driver Safety, Trainer since 2005, and Oregon’s Chief Trainer since June 2010, is the 2012 ADS West-1 Region Volunteer of the Year.
AARP Florida State President Doug Heinlen has appointed Dr. Horacio Soberon-Ferrer and Kenneth “Ken” Thomas, both of Miami, Dr. William Ternent of Daytona Beach and Dr. Brenda “BJ” Jarmon of Tallahassee as members of the AARP Florida Executive Council, a group of top volunteer advisors leading the nation’s largest membership organization for people 50+ in the nation’s “grayest” state.
AARP Michigan is seeking nominations for its 2013 Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors Michiganders who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their senior community members.

Although it’s been a while since many Floridians have had to deal with a hurricane, it’s always a good idea to be prepared. And with the 2013 hurricane season starting June 1, AARP Florida is urging our nearly 3 million Florida members to prepare for this year’s season.
Consumers lose billions of dollars every year to various kinds of consumer fraud, and according to AARP studies, older adults are especially vulnerable. A 2011 survey of fraud victims found that 81% of investment fraud victims and 84% of lottery fraud victims were over the age of 55.
