As do most Americans, the majority of Virginians want to stay in their own homes as they grow older. Too often, however, families find themselves in crisis when family members, who prize their independence, are unexpectedly required to use a wheelchair or a walker. They then find that a beloved home does not accommodate an individual with physical or other limitations, to include sight or hearing.

AARP Virginia speakers are ready, willing, and eager to give free presentations to community groups across the state about the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, means better coverage for those who already have health insurance, and more options for those who don’t, including a new way to shop for affordable, high-quality coverage. AARP wants to ensure that Americans 50+ understand what Obamacare means for them and their families. There is a lot to learn about the health care law, how it impacts Medicare, as well as new coverage options in Virginia.
Brenda Kelly-Nelum, a loyal AARP volunteer, is a champion for senior citizens. She has been a longtime activist for standing up and protecting seniors from abuse and wrongdoings. A Washington D.C native, Brenda attended public school before they were integrated. In 1954, her 7 th grade year, she went from a small six room elementary school to the quite large Eastern High School. The transformation she said is unforgettable. Brenda continued her education and received a BA from Howard University.
