There was good news in July on the labor front; nearly 200,000 jobs were added in the U.S. Indeed a bright spot for most job seekers, even though the unemployment rate stubbornly remains at 7.6 %. But this good news does not apply to all parts of the labor force. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobless rate among workers age 55-plus was among the highest in the country and 43% of older workers without a job had a 36-week period of joblessness.

When you are caring for a loved one at home who needs supervised care during the day, but you work or have other obligations, the Fairfax County Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) is here for you! Caregivers experience less stress as a result of having their loved one attend ADHC while they work or pursue other valued roles. Each center provides a safe and positive environment to individuals who need supervision during the day due to changes in their cognitive and/or functional abilities. Fees are based on participant’s income (and spouse if applicable) and determined by a sliding fee scale. Business hours are M-F, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with transportation available for many attendees. Dealing with a serious, progressive illness can be overwhelming. Whether you are living with a progressive illness, or you are caring for someone who is, you must make a lot of complicated decisions, often very quickly. It is hard to know how to navigate the health care maze, how to continue living as independently as possible, and how to put into place the unique care combination you need to be comfortable.
In March, AARP Virginia encouraged Fairfax residents to take the Fairfax Area Mobility Options Survey for Older Adults and People with Disabilities. The results are in and you can view the full report here. The survey instrument used 27 questions to learn about current trip patterns, unmet needs, barriers, and awareness of existing services. All older adults and people with disabilities residing in Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church were invited to participate. The survey yielded 1,163 responses, many thanks to those who responded.
Citing the enormous amount of volunteering and community engagement older adults perform, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors proclaimed May as Older Americans Month and endorsed the nationwide theme, Unleash the Power of Aging!, at its April 29 meeting.
