A new state law backed by AARP Washington aims to improve communication between hospitals and family caregivers and to ease patients’ transitions back home.

More than 800,000 Washingtonians care for older parents, spouses or loved ones, helping them to live independently in their own homes. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and on June 9, a new law took effect that will make life a little bit easier for them.

Volunteers and staff from Washington State headed to the other Washington (D.C.) on June 8 to advocate on behalf of AARP members and all older Americans on the crucial issues of Family Caregiving and Social Security. While meeting with members of Congress, these volunteers and staff made crucial asks:

AARP members are invited to a special live telephone town hall meeting with Governor Jay Inslee on Tuesday, February 16. We will talk about the state legislative session and a series of initiatives to help ensure that people age with dignity and purpose including long term care, Medicaid expansion, the Alzheimer’s state plan and caregiving. After the Governor, two legislators will talk about the CARE Act, a bill to support family caregivers.
