State officials, AARP Virginia and other advocates are ramping up efforts to better protect nursing home residents and staff during the coronavirus pandemic and to respond to families worried about their relatives’ safety.
During this time when our physical offices are closed to the public, you may wonder, “How can I get help from Social Security without visiting an office?” You can find the answer at www.ssa.gov/onlineservices, which links you to some of our most popular online services. You can apply for retirement and disability benefits, appeal a decision, and do much more.
We provide benefits to about one-fifth of the American population and help protect workers, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly. In 2020, we will pay about one trillion dollars in Social Security benefits to roughly 65 million people.

AARP Virginia is proud to announce a series of upcoming “Virtual Community Conversations” that will take place via Zoom. The first event in this series will be with VCU Health Hub at 25th on the subject of caregiving. Regardless of what stage of family caregiving you’re at—just beginning to anticipate a need, helping to coordinate a big move, or taking care of a family member full-time—having a good framework to help guide both you and your loved one will make the process easier. This virtual event will take place on Tuesday, May 26th from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and will be hosted by AARP Virginia Community Ambassador, Russell Schiavone. Registration is required and can be done here.
