Applications are now being accepted for the second Age-Friendly Greater Des Moines adult leadership program, Evolve: Reigniting Self & Community. This is a series of classes designed for 50+ residents interested in building community leadership skills, exploring their purpose and implementing a community project.
Because of its first-in-the-nation caucuses, presidential candidates make frequent visits to Iowa's towns and cities long before the official campaign season—and when they do, AARP Iowa volunteers are there to make sure that the candidates know Social Security is important to our members.
AARP Iowa joins in welcoming Frank W. Abagnale, nationally renowned expert on identity theft and fraud schemes, as an AARP Fraud Watch Network Ambassador. Abagnale will work with the Fraud Watch Network to provide online programs and community forums to educate consumers about ways to protect themselves from identity theft and cybercrime.
Iowans 50+ looking to start a business are invited to join with the U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP for a “Summer of Encore Mentoring,” events in Waverly and Muscatine Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 26 and 27. Building on the success of a joint SBA and AARP Mentor Month in April 2013 and April 2014, both organizations will match these “encore entrepreneurs” with successful business owners and community leaders for advice and assistance.
Aug. 14, 2015 is the 80th anniversary of the signing of Social Security into law in 1935. To mark the occasion, AARP Iowa is hosting a State Fair-themed Social Security celebration tent open from 10 am to 7 pm with games, prizes, birthday cake and cake-on-stick at the Iowa State Fair.
