Organizing for community change requires not only energy and commitment, but leadership as well. AARP Florida is helping local leaders sharpen their skills at its sixth annual Destino Leadership Academy conference Nov. 7. The conference aims to benefit communities by developing stronger leaders.

AARP Montana is cosponsoring the ninth annual HealthCare Forum Conference Dec. 3 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Great Falls. Elected officials, health care professionals and private citizens will discuss changes happening and changes needed in the state’s health care system. Author and consultant Nate Kaufman, an expert on peak performing hospitals, will give the keynote address.

AARP Ohio is pressing for legislation that could improve communication between hospitals and family caregivers.

Hashtags, emojis, tweets and memes. The vocabulary of modern online communication is only part of the challenge for people who are not familiar with the world of posting and tweeting. To help Nevadans age 50-plus enjoy the social media universe that their kids and grandchildren inhabit, AARP Nevada and the City of Henderson are offering free classes in Facebook and Twitter.

Erika Seiferling started volunteering for AARP when she got laid off as a management associate at Levi Strauss in Eugene. With the daily demands of the corporate world behind her, she had time to donate her skills and expertise to help the community.
