AARP and the Alzheimer’s Association are asking lawmakers to create a Silver Alert program in Oregon. Modeled after Amber Alert systems for missing children, Silver Alert systems enable authorities to notify the public when a vulnerable adult goes missing.
In an AARP survey of New York City voters age 50-plus, nearly half (48 percent) said they had experienced or witnessed age discrimination in the workplace or when seeking a job. These respondents said they either personally experienced discrimination or knew someone who—because of age—was not hired, was passed over for a raise or promotion, was laid off or forced out of a job, was encouraged or forced to retire before being ready or was the brunt of disparaging remarks.
