ASHEVILLE, NC -- With summer in full swing, you may be looking for ways to tiptoe back to normalcy after a tough year of COVID. You would probably prefer to continue staying outdoors as much as possible and avoid big crowds. Here is a sampling of possibilities from our partners around the Western North Carolina region, each chosen to highlight one of the eight domains of livability for residents of ages.

Join AARP Indiana for a virtual conversation on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and explore how this underutilized housing option can serve the 50+ population and their families. Depending on the state or community, ADUs can exist in many shapes and sizes, and AARP Indiana staff and volunteers will speak with a local planner in Allen County to discuss which type is permitted in their jurisdiction and a local businesswoman who built an ADU addition on to her home.

AARP Alaska has teamed up with the national nonprofit FitLot in a nationwide initiative to support the creation of outdoor fitness parks in each state and territory that it serves.

AARP Illinois is leading an education campaign on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to increase awareness of a new Chicago ordinance that permits the dwellings in five zones.

AARP's investment in a Springfield neighborhood is part of recognizing the city's efforts at becoming an age-friendly community. The Willamalane fitness park will be the only one in Oregon to feature FitLot equipment.
