AARP Connecticut has selected seven recipients for its fifth Livable Communities Support Program that funds quick-action projects in Connecticut communities that will help make immediate improvements or jumpstart long-term progress that will support residents. AARP Connecticut has funded 29 projects since the inception of the program in 2018.

Connecticut’s Nov. 8 general election includes federal races for the U.S. House and Senate, plus contests for the state legislature, governor, attorney general and several other offices.

AARP Connecticut to Host Live Tele-Town Hall to Discuss Protecting Veterans from Scams

AARP’s mission is to empower people to choose how they live as they age, and an important part of choosing how we live as we age is being able to choose where we live as we age. Most older adults want to remain in their own home and community as they age, but financial barriers and limited service options can make this difficult. We were pleased that the Connecticut legislature passed a state budget and several pieces of legislation that will support older adults who wish to age in place.

AARP Connecticut will work with lawmakers during the state’s 2022 legislative session to support and advocate on a variety of important policies and issues that affect residents and their families.

AARP CT believes that our local suppliers and vendors should reflect the diversity of our state, our volunteers and our members, especially when they are interacting directly with them. In 2016 we wanted to provide our diverse group of volunteers with training that would boost skills associated with communicating with confidence, storytelling, and dealing with difficult people/situations. That began our long standing relationship with The Bolder Company.

Connecticut passed the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act in 2019, which can pay workers up to $780 a week for 12 weeks when time off of work is required. Residents can access benefits starting January 1.

Of the nearly 218,000 veterans in Connecticut, only 26% have used their benefits at VA health care, according to U.S. Census Bureau.

A sweeping set of AARP-backed nursing home reforms have gone into effect: allowing residents to have electronic equipment, better infection controls and more direct care per resident.

More than 4 out of 5 Americans say they want to receive care at home instead of in an institutional setting if they need long-term care services in the future, according to a recent AARP survey. As part of ongoing state and federal efforts to “rebalance” long-term services and supports, the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) included a 10% temporary enhancement to the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP) for home and community-based services (HCBS). This unprecedented investment in home and community-based services presents Connecticut with a tremendous opportunity to bolster the programs and services that allow individuals to safely remain in their homes as they age.
