Natural gas is an indispensable part of our modern lifestyle. It supplies about one-forth of the energy consumed in the United States. But if Piedmont Natural Gas Company gets what is is asking state energy regulators for, residential customers will see rates increase by almost 12 percent. AARP weighed in with the NC Utilities Commission asking them to trim and reject parts of the company's rate hike request.

Throughout June, AARP North Carolina teamed up with the LGBT Center of Raleigh and SAGE of Central North Carolina to celebrate Pride Month through three unique virtual events highlighting the LGBTQ+ experience in our state. Each event focused on listening to the stories of LGBTQ+ North Carolinians and their individual and shared experiences over the years.

However, with the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine and re-opening of doctor’s offices to the public, is the future of telehealth in jeopardy?

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month and AARP North Carolina is working with other advocates for the aging to help prevent exploitation, abuse and neglect of older adults in the state.

This June, AARP proudly celebrates Black Music Month—a time to recognize and applaud the rich impact of African American music on our country’s history. Over the centuries, Black music has evolved and triumphed, not only shaping America’s traditions but also preserving the experiences and culture of the Black community. From joy and success to pain and perseverance, Black artists continue to create emotional content with palpable lyrics and rhythms that unite and inspire millions.

Learn more about the LGBTQ+ community in North Carolina, hear from your elected officials about legislation and inclusivity, and receive helpful resources and advice along the way.

AARP North Carolina is planning a series of six free online workshops on brain health every Thursday, from June 3 to July 8. The sessions cover steps you can take to reduce risk of dementia.
