(Ridgeland, MS) - AARP Mississippi is inviting all veterans in the area to attend the AARP Veterans Town Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The free event will be held at the Biloxi Civic Center, 578 Howard Avenue in Biloxi. Veterans may bring one guest. Lunch will be served.
(Ridgeland, MS) — The city of Gulfport has won the AARP Community Challenge, which aims to create change and improve quality of life at the community level. Gulfport won for its proposal to develop a Bark Park. Each winning project throughout the nation was partially or fully funded through the AARP Community Challenge grant and is set to be completed by November 1, 2017.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking to expand its team of volunteers in Oahu and the Neighbor Islands for the upcoming tax season. Approaching its 50 th year, Tax-Aide offers free tax filing help to anyone, especially those 50 and older, who can’t afford a tax preparation service. Tax-Aide volunteers make a difference in their communities by assisting many older, lower-income taxpayers who might otherwise miss out on the credits and deductions they’ve earned.
According to recent data, a couple retiring this year looks to spend an average of $275,000 on healthcare throughout the course of their retirement. Health care costs are rising faster than inflation and the overall economy, with one in five families reporting difficulty paying medical bills.
In fall 2016, The University of Connecticut Nonprofit Leadership Program successfully launched Encore!Fairfield County. The program created an opportunity for more Connecticut residents to participate in the Department of Public Policy’s award-winning program providing professionals age 50 and older in the state with a prestigious development experience assisting with a transition from a corporate career to one in the nonprofit sector. The Fairfield County offering is modeled after Encore!Hartford, entering into its eighth year and holds an impressive track record with 91% of participants finding employment (70% full-time), and 73% of those employed landing in the nonprofit sector.
Back by popular demand for the 12th year, AARP Nebraska and Shred-It will host a free community shredding day in Omaha on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 at The Center Mall on 42nd and Center Sts.
